Originally a small resort community named for the body of water it borders, Whitmore Lake is a small unincorporated Census-designated place straddling the northern edge of Washtenaw County, on US-23.

As residents have never incorporated the town, Lakers officially reside in either Washtenaw's Northfield Township or Livingston County's Green Oak Township.
